The images are made at the bee-research center HOBOS in Wurzburg, Germany on wednesday august 10/2011.
Since 2006 bee expert Professor Dr. J&#252;rgen Tautz has been developing HOBOS (Honey Bee Online Studies) as a novel and interactive teaching concept. They have conceived a specialized beehive equipped with sensors, measuring devices and thermographic cameras. On the basis of this living superorganism &#8211; a key organism for many ecosystems and agriculture &#8211; one can understand different aspects of the behavior of the honeybee, ecology and agriculture at a global level.

After extracting the last honey of the season, I was feeding the bees with sugarwater and gave them their own honeyframes as a desert.
While half of the colonies discoved quickly the new foodsource, the other bees attacked (why?) one of the weak colonies at the apiary.
Suddenly they were all attracted as by a magnet to the green hive, its opening not defendable - as it's an old hive, the closure was stuck.
As a beekeeper (it was my responsability) I had to intervene and I tried to set up a barricade before the entry at the flighthole.
it took up at least 4 hours before the situation was back to normal.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>513</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vtpf6ddr/info</loc><lastmod>2011-08-03</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>windflower</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vtpf6ddr/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>37</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt3l8qwc/info</loc><lastmod>2011-08-03</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>transmitter tree</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt3l8qwc/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>184</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Ve2c67x2/info</loc><lastmod>2011-11-30</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - monitored hive -piezo recordings</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Ve2c67x2/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>2 piezo sensors were inserted into the hive: one in between the comb frames, and one right in front of the entrance.
The piezo's were connected to a small mixing panel, in order to normalize the soundlevel.
In the video we can see rather well how the sound is connected to the bees' actions. Centaurea Jacea is a species of herbaceous perennial plants in the genus Centaurea, native to dry meadows and open woodland throughout Europe. It grows to 10&#8211;80 cm tall, and flowers mainly from June to September.
The flowerheads always look as if they are rayed, forming an open star and their nectar and pollen values are rather high, which makes the centaureas extremely attractive for all kinds of pollinating insects.
This specimen was collected in june 2011 during the D&#233;sert Num&#233;rique festival in St. Nazaire le D&#233;sert, la Drome, France.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>54</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt3avt7t/info</loc><lastmod>2011-08-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>WINDRIBBON4gustiness</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt3avt7t/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description honeybees - okno TopBarHive swarm 2011</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhqnd3ct/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>After loosing a first swarm out of the TopBarHive in april 2011, we could catch this afterswarm that settled down on Okno's garden table.
Due to extreme high temperatures and an advanced spring, the bees started swarming much sooner that normal.
In the TopBarHive we had a lot of queen cells, and as we leave everything over to the bees in a complete natural way, we suppose that there were more than 1 afterswarm ...
This swarm was not so big - we put it in our 'ready to start' monitoring hive and we add some young bees from the honey supers in the regular hive#01 in the okno rooftop garden.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>487</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vef71d5n/info</loc><lastmod>2011-05-16</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>swarm_okno_2011</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vef71d5n/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>-1</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vejjk5rt/info</loc><lastmod>2011-05-15</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - so-on hive04 : walkaway split-off</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vejjk5rt/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>144</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vha26no1/info</loc><lastmod>2011-05-15</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - so-on hive02 : zwermdrift_04</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vha26no1/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>93</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vi2pqbf4/info</loc><lastmod>2011-05-15</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - so-on hive02 : zwermdrift_03</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vi2pqbf4/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>175</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vdyj48gj/info</loc><lastmod>2011-06-09</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - so-on hive02 : zwermdrift_02</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vdyj48gj/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Swarm fever in hive#02, a sunday afternoon - may 2011.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>83</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vh5r19nl/info</loc><lastmod>2011-05-15</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - so-on hive02 : zwermdrift_01</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vh5r19nl/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>203</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vh5b7ps5/info</loc><lastmod>2011-05-11</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - OpenGreens : pleurotus ostreatus - time bending</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vh5b7ps5/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>The plastic bag is filled with willow woodchips mixed with pleurotus ostreatus spawn. It took 4 weeks for the mycellium to overgrow the woodchips. The 5th week, the mushrooms started to come out the fissures in the plastic bag.
During 5 days and 5 nights I took every 30 minutes a picture of the growing mushrooms. Unfortunately, the flashes didn't went off several times, which gives some jumps in the steady growth pace.
But the whole is a nice example of a natural time bending process.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>31</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vdypdaw4/info</loc><lastmod>2011-04-21</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>tik social and economic change. A group of artists have been invited by Radical_Hope (Heike Langsdorf) to set up this out-of-the-ordinary &#8220;camp&#8221;. On Monday January 17 everyone is welcome to come and learn to erect the hexayurts. A hexayurt is a special kind of tent, designed by Vinay Gupta as incredibly cheap shelter for those in need. You can then stay and get involved in the week-long process of action that aims to generate ideas: ideas about new ways of organising work, urban food production, alternative energy management, innovative financing schemes and so on.

The Okno participation in Burning Ice #4 consists of an OpenGreens Exchange Corner. The trading basis is the Connected OpenGreen Catalog &#8230; this is a book to be written in a collaborative way. It lists all goods and services that can be exchanged between OpenGreen users.
The maquette of the book is the basis for the discussions in the OpenGreens exchange corner, and the shared information and services cover different urban topics.
You can consider the book as a manual/proposition for living in the cities in a different way &#8230;
If we want to alter our habits, we&#8217;ll have to change our ideas on what is most essential and necessary in our lives. We&#8217;ll have to break with the common rules, deviate from the norm and create dynamic structures. Therefore we&#8217;ll use temporary places as the OpenGreens.

How sustainable is the city?
Can we provide for our own food, our own energy, our own media ecology?
Can we grow a selection of fruits and vegetables in rooftop gardens or collect wild edible plants in wastelands and on building sites - enough to live on?
Are you interested to start your own OpenGreen, on your balcony, your rooftop or your window sill?
Come and talk to us, we can advise you on how to set up green patches in unusual places &#8230; and get the best out of it.
You can find all information on OpenGreens in the first edition of our OpenGreens catalog, download the catalog here: http://so-on.be/SO-ON/OpenGreen/COG-catalog/v.1.0-smallspread.pdf</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>720</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vh6eypfu/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - grab time workshop 3</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vh6eypfu/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>tik network programing for windtime protocol first resume</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>262</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhn08tsn/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - Korcula lenz windmill</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhn08tsn/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>55</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veeuxjcv/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - Korcula lenz windmill 2</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veeuxjcv/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>19</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt44pllw/info</loc><lastmod>2010-12-17</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - writing tiks, padma, ecoconference01</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt44pllw/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>WRITING TIKS
is a workshop about a hypothetical content, method and style for new ecological media writing today.

In a concise 3-day program (17-19 November 2010 at OKNO, Brussels), we try to lay the foundations for a common style in treating the TIK themes and materials. Conform to the purpose of the 2-year project, and its bottom-up but collaborative strategies, we deal with the several blind spots that are still open, for thinking about a changed creative output in any media form: text, code, image, sound, word,&#8230;

The real subject of workshops is closely related to the TIK project scheme and deals with:
- the available documentation of the previous events and activities
- the representation and creative media writing throughout the project
- the outline of a common strategy for dealing with artistic research currently
- the content of the future conferences and publications

PADMA
During the TIK-project we organise in Brussels (22-25/11) a 'further development workshop' on padma, led by its conceptors: Jan Gerber and Sebastian Luettger (0x2620.org, Berlin) and Sanjay Bhangar (CAMP, Bombay).
The aim of the workshop is :
1. research how we can use padma as a tool for creative writing and documenting collaborative processes as TIK - starting from different theoretical approaches for writing though media files, as e.g. the grounded theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grounded_theory)
2. to research how padma can be embedded in or linked to other applications, as there are blender, pd, drupal, &#8230; to name some.
3. work on specific features in padma, to make it possible tu use padma as a 'stand alone, realtime installation/documentation' project &#8212; (e.g. automatic editing based on keywords &#8230;) namely the time machine.

What are ways to start thinking about pulling material out of pad.ma? From the onset, pad.ma has had an API (documented at http://wiki.pad.ma/wiki/API), a programming interface that allows you to pull out videos, perform searches, seek to exact time-codes in any video, fetch transcript and map data, and display all this however you please. Also Pad.ma's General Public License (PGPL, http://pad.ma/license) is designed specifically for the reuse of the material on pad.ma. Through the experience of running the archive, there have been various imaginations of multiple and layered forms of time-based annotation over video, including for: pedagogical tools for learning and discussion; presentation tools that combine text and video in new ways, essays and other writing formats enabled by rich and context-specific media.

At this workshop, we hope to explore some of content/technical ideas to annotate video on the web, and new qualities for videos (decomposting, automatic editing, &#8230;) as a result of online practices. We invite all TIK-collaborators to participate. Please upload your TIK video material, texts and/or software that, combined with existing materials and tools in pad.ma, can become innovative kinds of &#8220;output&#8221;, or new forms. These would also then feedback into the archive, and how we imagine its future.

EKOTIME CONFERENCE 01
At the first Eko Time conference we want to try to define a kind of convergent approach within the Time Inventors' Kabinet.
Several of the project's items will be discussed, like:
- the content possibilities of the future EkoTime Conferences
- the content possibilities of the future Open Greens
- the state of the art of the Wind Clock developments
- creative presentations about the creative works that are in development
- possible collaborative proposals for the future

Noon. The t&#176; is suddenly raising to 17.5&#176;. The foraging bees leave the hive and return with pollen. They are very agitated. Young worker bees make their first flights. All the bees' action is provocated by the appearance of the sun and by the warmth of the sun. Bees are sun-loving animals and they adore warmth.

In 1977, Joseph Beuys created a monumental installation for documenta 6 in Kassel, Germany. Entitled Honeypump in the Workplace, it pumped two tons of honey through plastic tubing, using motors lubricated with over 200 pounds of margarine. Honeypump was the embodiment of Beuys' idea that energy (in this case, honey) and heat (generated by the machine's motion) are symbolically connected to the notion of social sculpture.

Beuys often cited energy and warmth as important concepts in his sculpture. The two are closely connected physical phenomena--heat is in fact a kind of energy and is often produced in tandem with other kinds of energy, such as light and motion. But for Beuys they also were powerful metaphors suggestive of the transformation, both spiritual and physical, that he felt contemporary culture needed to undergo.

While filming, a varroamite fell out of her thorax-fur. The young bee got more lively again, due to the warmth of the microscope lights. I put her in front of the flighthole, and she nicely walked into the hive again. I destroyed the dirty varroa mite.
Varroa is still a huge problem for hive#01. Some 30 mites a week are dropping down, even after a treatment with Thymovar. Where is the litterature which gives expression to Nature? He would be a poet who could impress the winds and streams into his service, to speak for him; who nailed words to their primitive senses, as farmers drive down stakes in the spring, which the frost has heaved; who derived his words as often as he used them &#8211; transplanted them to his page with earth adhering to their roots; whose words were so true and fresh and natural that they would appear to expand like the buds at the approach of spring, though they lay half smothered between two musty leaves in a library &#8211; aye, to bloom and bear fruit there, after their kind, annually, for the faithful reader, in sympathy with surrounding Nature.

Henry David Thoreau &#8211; Writing the Wilderness

Friday, october 8th, I went to look for mushrooms at the Jardin Experimental Massart, one of the the fieldworkspaces of the biology department of the free university of Brussels (ULB).
On my way over there, I was thinking about one of the 20th century pioneer-experimental artists: John Cage.
John Cage was not only a major figure of the musical avant-garde but also an avid mycologist, collector and consumer of mushrooms. His knowledge of the fungal world was legendary.
Indeterminacy was a lecture/performance work in which Cage recited a series of one minute stories and anecdotes in no particular order. Many of these stories related to his love of mushrooms and his experiences of collecting and studying them.
In the experimental garden/forest, I picked some of the mushrooms to study them in my studio. Following movie gives random impressions of the research of the species under the microscope, accompanied by an excerpt of Indeterminacy, read by Cage.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>499</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vi7mhvdp/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - windclocks : trees </video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vi7mhvdp/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>598</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vsbgqwov/info</loc><lastmod>2010-11-22</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - korcula #1</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vsbgqwov/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>The workshop windclocks building in Korcula</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>588</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vsschmrt/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - windclocks : windmill's prototypes &amp; synthesis</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vsschmrt/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>117</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhm0nrj8/info</loc><lastmod>2010-10-19</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - korcula #2</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhm0nrj8/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>201</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veep1zso/info</loc><lastmod>2010-10-18</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - korcula #3</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veep1zso/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>926</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhm4r3ki/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - mouse windclock cardboard test</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhm4r3ki/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>40</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vs77s5g7/info</loc><lastmod>2011-04-13</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - windclocks : stones</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vs77s5g7/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Stones are recordings of the slow passing of time and the turbulence of matter-energy. </video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>598</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhae3zqd/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - windclocks : krav&#237;n</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhae3zqd/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>The Summer Workshops Krav&#237;n take place in a rural environment, at the edge of the small village Hranice u Malce, in the Vysocina region of the Czech Republic.
The activities twist around the several main themes: beekeeping / wind clocks / radio art / + agri-kultura.

In the beekeeping workshop, Annemie Maes will talk about new artistic approaches towards beekeeping and her experiences with the citz beehives. The apiarists from Vysocina from the Czech Beekeepers Union (Cesky svaz vcelaru - see http://www.beekeeping.cz/) will talk about their experiences. We plan to visit the nearby beekeeping educational center in Nasavrky village, with the arboretum (http://www.souvnasavrky.cz/). Hopefuly some of the numerous local beekeepers will also come.

With Gert Aertsen, Marcio Domingues, Hannes Hoelzl, G&#237;van Bel&#225;, Michal Kindernay and others you can invent ecological time with wind clocks in an open air workshop. The idea is to construct a series of simple wind mills - clocks in the surroundings of Krav&#237;n.

Amplion: together with Czech artist Johana Svarcova you can work on a radio play, which will hopefully go on air in the village radios.

In the evenings, we plan to have discussions, screenings, concerts, artistic presentations within an agri-cultural context. Also Diafilm Sound Robots by Barbara Huber, a selection of Hungarian movies curated by Livia Roszas, Kravin movie by Viola Jezkova, concert by the band from Brno, Hugo a Zoe. And the local country Bago band for the opening.

You will find the actual information here: http://yo-yo-yo.org/summer_workshops_kravin.html. </video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>588</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vej61mjh/info</loc><lastmod>2011-02-01</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>TIK - windclocks : leaves</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vej61mjh/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>598</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vsrug41r/info</loc><lastmod>2010-11-19</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Open Greens : Urban Beekeepers Part 01</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vsrug41r/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>A first approach to cover Urban Beekeeping in visuals. Get familiar with the 5 beehives of the OKNO and SO-ON apiaries in Brussels city center.
The beehives are located in the 2 rooftop gardens of the TIK project: the wildflower garden of OKNO and the edible forest rooftop garden of SO-ON. Footage covers foraging and swarming of the bees, as well as the topic 'bees as architects' - which will be the main topic of our bee-observation and research over the coming months/years.

The Bee Observatories in the OpenGreen-project transforms 2 rooftop gardens located in the center of Brussels at about half a kilometer distance from each other into communicating vessels. Several hives with both carnica and buckfast bees were installed in the gardens. The bees manage to bridge the spatial distance and associate the locations by going about their business and natural processes within their individual yet overlapping territories. The presence and activities of the bee colonies makes the gardens interconnect and interfere. The emerging inter-space can be perceived as place of encounters and neighborhood.

set-up : In a first stage, the project idea suggests the transformation of 2 urban rooftop gardens into interfering, communicating (synchroniced) entities by installing bees into both spaces. The two roof top gardens are located at about 400 metes of distance from each other at Koolmijnenkai 30 (OKNO) and Vlaamsesteenweg 60, respectively and offer convenient locations for beehives. The &#8220;technical&#8221; necessity of air channels for free entrance and exit flight trajectories and sunny location for at least parts of the day are met. The inter-visibility between the two places is given and hence emphasizes the &#8220;symmunicative&#8221; and encountering nature of the installation.

The distance between the locations can be metaphorically bridged by the bee's presence and their natural activities. Since each colony will be active in a radius of at least a few kilometers from their housing hive, the respective trajectories, areas of floral visits and individual territories will be overlapping and an interference of the hives/gardens takes place. A new space of encounter, the mutual area of existence, can be defined, a new perception of neighborhood can be realized. satellite view

Observatory - Documentation : Observing and monitoring the activities of the hives coupled with ongoing documentation of each individual hive as well as the interaction between the different colonies will be performed. Information can be obtained from bee hives through visually observing, by listening or smelling. Changes of the hives can be monitored in terms of weight, size or outside/inside temperature of the habitation/colony and via the honey amount or quality. This data has abundant information value, but can also be used and made available in a more indirect/symbolic way. A translation of the signals/data into something publicly accessible is intended. Direct &#8220;public moments&#8221; on the rooftop gardens in the vicinity of the hives add an interactive facet.

Interconnection with special flowers : In garden 1, the plants are chosen on their edible qualities. Also the nectar and pollen values are an important factor to decide which plants will be choses or which grains will be sown. In garden 2, the experiment is different. Here, the plants come with the birds and the winds, and we'll monitor the values of this complete natural setup and how the bees react on it.

The range of habitats in urban areas is surprising. Most of the major terrestrial habitat types are represented in towns and cities, either as remnants of previously rural environments, or as artificial analogues of semi-natural habitats.
The Open Green project focuses on two rooftopgardens located in Brussels&#8217; city center, 400 m apart : an edible forest rooftop garden on top of a parking lot and a wild flower rooftop garden on top of an old warehouse.

The Open Green project blends organic and technological matter into one and the same nature. Through analogue and digital means we do long term observations on the growth, blossoming and decay of plants and insects submitted to natural elements such as wind, sun, rain and pollution in an urban context.
We monitor and extract data from natural processes both on a micro garden level as on a macro city level and make the data available online in realtime with open wireless citynetworks.

We research the connections between people, technology and the possible applications of the rooftop gardens. Can the gardens&#8217; evolution be controlled, generated, enhanced or imagined in artworks? Does the fusion of natural and artificial matter produce new organisms, new environments, new forms of nature? Can technology animate nature and vice versa?
The Open Green is an artificial environment, a hybrid of nature and culture. The harvest is about scraping data of any kind from the garden and using it for organic &#225;nd media applications.

Gardening on rooftops in ever-increasingly dense and sprawling cities is an original way to take back unused and sterile spaces like rooftops, patios and balconies and to transform them into livable spaces that are lush, productive and purifying. In addition to embellishing the urban landscape with food-producing gardens at the tops of buildings and producing fresh food, these new spaces for the community enable us to reduce the ecological footprint of the houses and institutions of which we are an integral part. Recovering and decontaminating water, cultivating organic food, composting organic waste as well as ?ltering and cooling down air are all part of a mindset to make our established landscape more sustainable. Therefore, in the current context of environmental degradation, over-consumption and junk food culture, taking care of ourselves and our environment enables us to take a step down the path to healthy cities and communities.
Rooftop gardening means taking up an inspiring, ecological and productive activity, and developing new links with the food chain, the seasons, the environment and the community. This utopia&#8217;s vision is to turn the city into a garden and its inhabitants into gardeners.

The 8th of march 2010 we started to setup a permaculture rooftopgarden on the 6th floor of a parking in the center of Brussels. It was a very cold day, -6&#176; , cloudy and snowy. The next day we got some icy sun but all of us were freezing, working outside! At the end of the second day, the basic structure of the garden was in place. The evolution from a bare parkinglot rooftop to the basics of a rooftop garden can be seen in this timelapse movie. We will give regular updates of the edible forest rooftopgarden over the different seasons. We will also setup a database of all the trees, shrubs, plants, herbs, wild flowers, fruits and vegetables that found a spot in this rooftop garden.
Following video covers the 2 setup days, with a framerate of 1 image/second. The length of the video is 27 minutes but it spans 2 days of work!</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>1598</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vu0do93j/info</loc><lastmod>2010-06-07</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - carnica's swarming twice</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vu0do93j/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>On a beautiful day early june, the carnica bees started to swarm, completely unexpected. One part of the population of the hive moves with the old queen and founds a new colony. The other half of the population stays in the old hive, with a new queen.
To raise new queens the workers build appropriate cells called queen cells. Shortly before the first of the new queens emerges from her cell, the old queen leaves the hive accompanied by half of the community.
The swarming bees settle around the queen in a large cluster. Scout bees are busy looking after a suitable nesting site. They inform the waiting swarm in bees&#8217; language -by dancing on its surface- in what direction and at what distance the new home is to be found. All age groups of bees are represented in a swarm, so there will be no shortage of building labor.

On a beautiful day early june, the carnica bees started to swarm, completely unexpected. No signs, no spare queen cells. They gathered in one of the olive trees of the rooftop garden, and after a few hours they formed a perfect cluster, ready to catch ... or to fly away.

For me, it was a first experience with a bee-swarm. Luckily we had an experienced beekeeper between us. Aloys took a plastic bucket and a wooden stick, an in a gentle way he 'pushed' the bees into the bucket. We had to repeat this several times, till all the swarm-bees, hanging from the little 'connected-dome' garden table, were in the bucket.
The atmosphere was very bizar. There was something in the air, an unexpressed tension. Bees were everywhere in the garden. On every leaf, on every plant. They were dead-quiet, their stomachs filled with honey. But the feeling was that this behaviour could change in a second. A rather 'Hitchcock-anian' experience.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>969</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfwxn6ld/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - kempische hive swarming</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfwxn6ld/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>The second week of may the Kempische Hive (with Carnica bees) at okno started to swarm. But the bees ran on their own schedule, and we had to follow. The experience of catching a first swarm was rather strong and emotional. of course I did not have a pro-camera with me, so I recorded the process with my photo-camera and with my mobile phone.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>360</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhqrc2q3/info</loc><lastmod>2010-11-18</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Open Greens : okno rooftop garden anaglyph test #01</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vhqrc2q3/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>292</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vi3brhzu/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - small hive swarming</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vi3brhzu/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>One hive, that we just we have made up of a queen and part of other swarming hive, was not happy with his home.

The project involves not only public discussion, but an extensive mapping and documentation of these proposals in an art context. Drawing on a wide range of artistic and theoretical fields, the aim is to imagine new and sustainable relationships between humans, their environments and technologies.

As artists, filmmakers, theorists and activists we have to enrich the public debate around sustainable living, the environment and eco-technology. We have to think about the kind of future in which we want to live and work. What social and economic systems can we envisage beyond the regular ones? Is there anything that we can learn from existing (non-western) experiments?

I started with the Politics of Change project when I was in India visiting the Barefoot project, but it&#8217;s about so much more: the main focus is on communities that take positive change into their own hands. On people who decide to get up and act, who organise themselves spontaneously, from the bottom up, and who form networks to realise that change.

The Brussels&#8217; PoC workshop discussed gender and activism in the cultural field, examining the technical tools we use to document what we do and to spread the word. The participants in this open dialogue came from different fields; there were writers, filmmakers, anthropologists, journalists, visual artists, economists and researchers. </video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>338</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vu1bke9x/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Politics of Change : questionnaire Barefoot College - India</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vu1bke9x/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>The research project &#8216;Politics of Change&#8217; is a collective work in which artists, working women, activists and ecologists, economists, educators and anthropologists want to initiate collaborative dialogues to research ideas and solutions, which support decentralised structures, diversity and community development.

I started with the Politics of Change project when I was in India, visiting the Barefoot project, but it&#8217;s about so much more: the main focus is on communities that take positive change into their own hands. On people who decide to get up and act, who organise themselves spontaneously, from the bottom up, and who form networks to realise that change.

My interest in women solar engineers and the Mahila Samiti groups for women&#8217;s empowerment in Rajasthan comes out of a personal involvement that links art, women, empowerment, ecology, technology and social engagement.

When I learned about the Barefoot College project (http://www.barefootcollege.org), I was struck by certain similarities between two practices that seem worlds apart at first sight: my own artistic work environment at Okno in Brussels and the practical trainings/workshops at Barefoot College in Rajasthan.

Okno is an artist-run organisation for media, art and technology. Its focus lies on collective technological research projects. (http://okno.be/) Current projects use sustainable energies like solar/photovoltaic and wind energy to weave city communities, mesh networks and create public space art projects. Our decentralised DIY workshops are a platform for sharing knowledge to arrive at poignant results.

Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan, uses a similar structure to train solar engineers. The learning environment is open and decentralised. Knowledge is passed on from the bottom up, using a hands-on approach.

The village community selects which women will be sent on a six-month solar engineering training, and every village family contributes a share in the remuneration of the engineers to set up and maintain the village solar system.

When I went to Barefoot College for the first time in 2008, I discovered that the solar workshops are only a very small part in a much bigger story concerning the empowerment of the participating women. Diving into the matter, I quickly realised that a documentary film had to become the central issue of my project. This clip and the interviews with the women solar engineers of Barefoot College are from the film, Mahila, which can be seen here: http://padma.okno.be/Vsaz4jj6/info.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>338</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfbxkaqq/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Mahila-the movie (v.05)</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfbxkaqq/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>1391</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vezexwks/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Politics of Change : Pokaran blues</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vezexwks/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>193</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vgdizfwj/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Mahila-the movie (v.00)</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vgdizfwj/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description /><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>433</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veueu99r/info</loc><lastmod>2010-10-19</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Open Greens : edible forest rooftop garden - timelapse #1</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veueu99r/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Why garden on rooftops in the city?

The length of the video is 49 minutes but it spans 2 days of work!</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>2930</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfx3reul/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Politics of Change : interview with Sita Devi</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfx3reul/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Sita Devi is a singer. Some years ago she decided to start a 6 months training as solar panel engineer, and she continued her education with a focus on solar cookers.
Today the women are responsible for the construction of the large parabolic dishes, covered with regular pieces of mirror.
They tailor them precisely according to the blueprints of a German Engineer, Wolfgang Scheffler, with whom they still collaborate and improve the reflectors and machinery when needed.
They organise their smithy, weld and solder the mechanical parts for the cookers out of recycled bicycle parts. Their apparatus are sold to organisations in India who use them in community kitchens.

Travelling here makes me think about time in a different way. City time contrasts to country time. Back home all those train rides, cities and people remain memories, moments suspended in time. Memories woven into a polyphonic snapshot of a fascinating country.

The representation of the Other. This is the topic, the central piece of my existence as a woman, as an activist, as someone who is been constantly moving and crossing over different cultures in my own personal existence.
All these images of the exotical, when Black people or Indian people are represented everytime as different &#8230; if we deconstruct this category we are the Others in ourselves.
The idea of the Other implicates a definition about yourself. You must be clear in the definition about who you are to defend the Other as an Other. And I think that&#8217;s probably the big challenge: to make real new definitions about who are your Others.

The solar engineer project has demonstrated that bringing electricity to remote villages through solar energy could also be women's responsibility.
(Men might easily run off with their new knowledge and start their own business in the city somewhere, whereas the women give it back to the community and first and for all to their family. They invest in a better education for their children.)

Most of the solar engineers come from traditional and conservative societies and they have struggled to fight for their identity. That&#8217;s why this new confidence in the potential of women is so important.

Initially, the women participated in the training to fulfill a basic need: getting a job and improving the financial position of the family. The training was first regarded with suspicion, but as the results became visible, it earned the trust of rural communities. Especially the wider consequences are groundbreaking: the women gain self-respect and have secured a stronger position in the family structures. These rural women have become symbols of a new partnership within the community and are often used as examples to propagate and elevate women&#8217;s status.

In a second phase the participating women become teachers and pass their knowledge to other (also foreign) women. In this video we see a group of African women (from 8 different countries) following a six month workshop in Rajasthan. For most of them it was the first time that they left their home village and their family to go and live in another country, confronted with another culture. </video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>150</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfc9trp4/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Politics of Change : women solar engineers part1</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vfc9trp4/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>At Barefoot College, ordinary men and women -whatever their qualifications- can learn about solar energy. Roles have to be flexible: the teacher can be the learner and the learner can be the teacher.
The whole environment is one of creative learning, demystifying technology and unlearning through processes that are natural, non violent and respectful.
At present time, 32 Buthanese girls and 6 Mauretanian women follow a 6 months training to become a solar engineer in their home villages.

From start on, the decision to step into the solar project is community-based. The home-village (mostly remote villages without electricity) selects and delegates its future women engineers for a 6 months training at Barefoot College in Rajasthan. In a community contract, every village family engages itself to pay its share in the remuneration of the engineers to set up and maintain the village solar system at their return home. The future engineers learn the necessary skills to repair inverters and charge the controllers for the solar units they will look after.
Every family of the remote village communities pays a small sum for the equipment and the services of the solar engineers. As such, every member of the community takes his responsability in this ecological project of sustainable energy.

In the solar engineer training productivity results from collective work. The learning environment is open and decentralised and knowledge is passed on in a bottom-up and hands-on way. The students are taught by 3 Indian women, pioneers from the solar workshop section. Students and teachers don't speak each other languages. They communicate by sign- and body language, pointing to the colors of their sarees to indicate the colors of the necessary resistors and capacitors for building the electrical circuits.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>250</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vugv503g/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - birth of a honeybee</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vugv503g/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Snapshot of the birth of 2 bees in the so-on hive. Their main drawback is that they are very liberal in their application of propolis to inner surfaces of their hives, thus acting to defeat one of the main purposes of the modern beehive &#8212; that combs should be easily removable for inspection.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>151</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Ve2gjcbj/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - pollen harvest</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Ve2gjcbj/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Honeybees returning to the hive with pollen on their hind legs..
Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used as food for larvae.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>217</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veeeody5/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>city honeybees - end of summer</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Veeeody5/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>As the honey-super of the hive was placed without all frames, the bees started to build their own comb-wax constructions for storing the honey.
The three parts, fixed with propolis to the cover of the hive, were build over a period of 48 hours. The first honey of this unconventional organised super was harvested beginning of july, and gave us &#177; 3kgs of pure gold!

The brood comb is the beeswax structure of cells where the queen bee lays eggs. It is the part of the beehive where a new brood is raised by the colony. During the summer a good queen may lay 1500-2000 eggs per day, which results in 1500-2000 bees hatching after the three week development period.
The brood comb is usually found in the lower part of the beehive while the honey comb may surround the brood area and is found exclusively in the honey supers. When a queen does not have enough brood comb to lay eggs due to congestion from pollen or honey, the bee colony may be more prone to swarm.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>843</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt44ko5k/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Politics of Change : solarcooker girls cooperative</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vt44ko5k/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Eco-feminists want to redefine how societies look at productivity and activity of both women and nature. 'Diverse women for diversity' promotes a global women's campaign on bio-diversity and cultural diversity, echoing women's voices from the local and grassroots level to global fora and international negotiations.

In Tilonia, a small village in the Rajasthani desert, a group of illiterate women started a cooperative to build solar cookers. Out of recycled materials, they construct little by little huge parabolic devices that work with the energy of the sun. The use of technologies such as solar energy empowers women to stay 'off the grid', a statement that symbolises their independence from dominant structures.

The women work with appropriate technology that is tailor made for their specific community and takes into consideration the environmental, cultural, social and economic characteristics of that community. This technology requires fewer resources and is easier to maintain. It has a lower overall cost and a smaller impact on the environment than high technology, and it prefers labor-intensive solutions over capital-intensive ones.

The women workers organise themselves and explore the assets of nature and distributed green power. As working women, they claim their rights in the community and work towards a radical shift in policy and practice.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>523</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vs66onht/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Politics of Change : interview with Rose Akumu</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vs66onht/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Rose Akumu is a rural woman from Uganda, who came to Barefoot College (http://www.barefootcollege.org) for a six-month workshop in solar engineering. It's her first trip away from her African village. After the workshop, she will return home and install solar panels on the rooftops of her village to bring electricity to the families of her community.

In India, the Monsanto intoxicated seeds are a huge problem, and the organisation of Vandana Shiva is sinds a long time an active activist against all forms of biopiracy and genetically manipulated seeds.
Their aim is to unify the farmers to make them stronger, and to keep their rights in their own hands.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>706</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vg7umx1w/info</loc><lastmod>2010-10-20</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Open Greens : navdanya farmwalk</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vg7umx1w/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>A walk on the farmland of Navdanya, the ecological, biological, hand-son, theoretical, meditationand yoga-farm of Vandan Shiva.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>808</video:duration></video:video></url><url><loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vtoysyru/info</loc><lastmod>2010-05-26</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>1.0</priority><video:video><video:title>Politics of Change : interview with Rami Devi</video:title><video:thumbnail_loc>http://padma.okno.be/Vtoysyru/poster.75.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:description>Rami Devi is an activist for women'd empowerment. Navdanya is a project started by Vandana Shiva. The organisation provides direction and support to environmental activism. Navdanya is actively involved in the protection of indigenous knowledge and culture. It spreads out as a growing network of students and teachers, creating awareness on the hazards of genetic engineering. It defends people's knowledge from biopiracy and food rights in the face of globalisation.

Diverse Women for Diversity is a specific division of Navdanya that provides women with a common international platform to air their views. It supports women's grassroots movements by uniting their voice from the local level to global fora and international negotiations. Diverse Women for Diversity conducts a non-violent resistance and opposition to globalisation, emergency of genetic engineering and patents on life forms.

Navdanya organises on a regular basis workshops, seminars and hands-on actions. Informal communities for learning versus formal education : what can we learn from it? At the Navdanya events we find a colourful mix of participants : experts, students, teachers, DIY-ers and workers, activists and artists. Together they create a horizontal network that expands organically in a self-organising way.

What about urban vs. rural agriculture? Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in a town or city. It is mostly applied in reduced spaces as terraces and balconies. The farming practice is mostly organic and is mainly directed to domestic consumption. Urban agriculture promotes energy-saving local food production and is therefore considered as a sustainable practice.</video:description><video:family_friendly>Yes</video:family_friendly><video:duration>424</video:duration></video:video></url></urlset>
